Pascale Marthine Tayou, Coloris
Coloris consists of a concrete surface with a representation of a world map onto which stand about one hundred pastel-colour metal poles. Their height ranges from 6 to 12 metres and on top of each one stands an egg. The installation is an explosion of bold, bright colours, both warm and cold, all reverberating through the city.

Pascale Marthine Tayou (Yaoundé, 1967) lives and works in Ghent, Belgium and in Yaoundé in Cameroon. Tayou’s practice incorporates different media, such as installation, photography, video, drawings and even books. The research the artist conducts travelling across the world is often tied to the analysis of cultural identity, by employing a colour palette evocative of African landscape, and to the study of personal identity, as signified by the artist’s ironic decision to give himself a female name. The work Coloris sets out to explore some of the issues raised by migrations and the surfacing of a global village whose boundaries are yet hard to define. Pascale Marthine Tayou focuses on the effects of the circulation of objects, materials, and people across the world, mixing geographies, and combining symbols, techniques, and materials from different cultural traditions in order to create new meaning and new interpretations of reality.
